Darth Vader

Darth Vader. One of the most iconic Movie Villains of all time, the Dark Lord of the Sith grabbed our attention on the Tantive IV and never let go. It is only fitting that his first (of very, very many) action figures was, and still is, a must have for any Star Wars collection. Darth Vader’s figure was available on all vintage card backs including A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Power of The Force and Tri-Logo card backs. Only two major variations of this figure are available, the first is the ‘Double Telescoping’ lightsaber which was constructed of two pieces that slid out of Vader’s right arm in a ‘Double Telescoping’ action. This variation was only available for a very limited time on the original 12-Back A New Hope card back, right after it’s release Kenner decided it was more cost effective to produce a single telescoping lightsaber and made the transition before many of the double telescoping lightsabers shipped. The second variation I’d like to mention is the Japanese Takara Vader figure, which is a very rare and highly desirable Vader. Though they have similar stances, the main difference of the Takara Vader is the sculpt, which is easiest to spot by looking at the head, but only by someone who knows what to look for.

My choice for the best modern equivalent goes back to 2005 with the Evolutions Darth Vader figure, it’s Super Articulation (15 Points!!) and removable helmet really seal the deal for me. I was torn between either that one or 2008’s Legacy Collection Vader with the two piece removable helmet but I was never a fan of the way the helmet pieces looked 'off' on that particular figure. If you want a non removable helmet but the same figure look no further than 2007’s Target Exclusive Order 66 2-Pack with Vader and Commander Bow.
