I’m torn on the figure. He’s SA, and he’s entirely black except for his hands and face. The face is by far the best part, as this was specifically meant to represent the original incarnation of the Emperor in ESB as portrayed by Clive Revell before he was murdered by Ian McDiarmid. I made that up, by the way. Anyway, this will probably be the only figure specifically with that face sculpt. Of course, the flip side, is that he only appeared as a holograph in ESB, so even then, it’s not quite right. Meh.
What bothers me most is the robes. They seem extra flowy and flimsy. I think of the Emperor as wearing substaintial robes, very thick and heavy. Also, the cloth is subsidized by a plastic chest piece, which is either supposed to be more of his robe, or part of his clothing under the robes. I don’t really like it either way. The hood is a separate piece. Early pictures made it look ridiculous, but now that I have it in hand, it actually looks pretty good. He’s got one handed sculpted in a claw-like manner, which is useless to grip either his lightsaber or his cane. The other hand can hold either, but not both of course.
So, best part is the face, worst part is just about everything else. There’s a lot going on with this figure, but very little of it works, in my opinion. I guess I’m glad Hasbro honored this actor, even though he was cut from the movie.
