9/10 Bantha Skulls
Dear Hasbro,
This is exactly what I want out of my toys.
Damn near perfect. These two are based on one of my favorite EU concepts, the Imperial Knights, and the figures perfectly capture the characters. Draco’s sour expression and as-yet unexplained facial scars are well sculpted and highly detailed, and Krieg’s “straight man” act is well represented in this figure.
Obviously, they share the same body, despite what I’m convinced is a slightly different shade of paint on the armor. This is a good thing, as the bodies are top notch, with full articulation at the ankle, knee, hip, waist, shoulders, a ball jointed neck, elbows, and wrists. Sure, it’s swivel wrist (no Clone Wars hinge or mid abdomen), but this is pretty much the maximum amount of articulation they could do and maintain the spot-on likeness of the figures.
Some of my favorite little things are the way the implemented the soft goods (as you can see in the rear view, they apparently put the hooded cloak on before securing the upper portion of the chest piece, so the cape comes out of the bottom, the hood out of the top), and, of course, the white lightsabers are perfect, both for keeping with the actual comic accurate representation and as prime custom fodder. Just a touch of highlighter, and you’ve got any color saber you need.
My only complaint, and the one thing that keeps this pack from a perfect ten, is the paint applications. All the major stuff is great, but a few minor details missed the mark. The Imperial emblem on the shoulder and gauntlet of both figures looks almost as though they packaged it before the pain dried, leaving them with more of a “black dot inside a silver dot inside a black dot” symbol, with some tiny black lines on it. In the pack I opened, Krieg’s shoulder emblem was the best of the four. Unfortunately, to balance this, Krieg’s hair is a mottled combo of fluorescent orange with blotches of mustard. I have no idea what went on here, but will likely add a fresh coat of paint myself to fix it.
Another note (not really a complaint) is the hoods. Symptomatic of Hasbro’s use of soft goods in hoods is the “wind sock effect”, but at least it’s better than how it fit in the package… I couldn’t help but think of the panty raid scene from Revenge of the Nerds with the way the hood was wrapped around Krieg’s dome.
