Well, this is a big “meh”. For $20 you get 2 bikes with figures, 2 pistols, and 2 rifles. Not a horrible deal.
There is absolutely nothing new here, this is almost 100% repaint, with a little kitbashing. The Biker scouts are almost the same mold as the ones that came with the Endor Ultimate Battle Pack (TAC). They have legs that are positioned better than the carded figure for straddling the bike, and the belt is also positioned to allow for this. The only “new” thing is that the legs are styled like a snowtrooper, so this essentially is a kitbash. It’s an attempt to add to the believability that scouts are flying at 700 miles an hour unprotected across the arctic snows of Hoth. As far as playability, this means that the trooper loses his ankle holster for the pistol, which is too bad.
It’s a good figure, well articulated, it just looks a bit silly when it’s standing because of the wide stance.
The bike, well, this is the big disappointment. No change here from the POTF2 mold. In fact, the product stamp says “Tonka Corporation, Made in China, copyright 1995 LucasFilm LTD.”
The handlebars in particular are still wildly inaccurate. Conspiracy theorists would say that Hasbro squeezed one more product out of this mold prior to releasing an upgrade. It’s painted white, with some dirt, but the metallic scratch marks look like a kid took a paint brush and added them - not good. Also, for some bizarre reason, there is a Republic Logo emblazoned on the back. I mean, c’mon, man.
I guess these will look cool in a big Hoth Diorama, as I can picture these as being “just off screen” EU. But seriously, open air speeder bikes on Hoth? The extend of the cold weather gear for these troopers is the aforementioned snowtrooper styled legs. At least his shins will be warm.
If you like repainted Imperials disguised as Republic troopers with 13 year old equipment set in a barely possible situation, this set is for you!
