Here we are again reviewing a 5 point of articulation figure despite the fact that we have professed our utter disdain for the format.  As a Boba Fett themed site, we feel a slight compulsion to make sure we have the Boba Fett figures covered, so here we are.  Truth be told, I’m more of a Darth Vader guy myself, but “The Black Helmet” site was taken and it turns out that has a totally different connotation.  I had to wash my eyes with a vinegar and bleach solution for seven days.  And that clock kept resetting because I kept going back for more.  Alright, enough of that.  Lets talk figures.

My first statement is going to catch you off guard.  There are things this figure does better than the most recent Vintage Collection Boba Fett figure.  Before you think that I’ve been placed under some voodoo mind control by Jayson from Yakface, don’t misconstrue that as advocacy for the 5 POA line.  What it means is that the Evolutions Boba Fett mold, which had its imperfections from day one, deserves to be retired.  We need an all new Episode V Boba Fett in the collector line.

The handling of the chest armor is much better on this budget release as is the “wheat” emblem tampo on the upper right hand side of the chest.  The sculpting on the chest armor on the Vintage Collection Fett appears sloppy and imprecise with a bizarre texture.  The “wheat” emblem is also barely discernible.  Score one for the Saga Legends Fett in this regard.  The bantha skulll (or Mandalorian Mythosaur skull if you’re a fancy pants) on the shoulder is so much be better on the Legends version that it’s almost beyond compare.  Due to the exposed shoulder articulation on the Vintage Collection version, that tampo is virtually nonexistent. Score two.

With their lack of aticulation and crude sculpting of the tools in the pockets below the knees, the legs have a decided vintage Kenner feel to me.  This may be good if that’s the sort of thing you’re into (weirdo).  Probably for safety reasons, the protrusions are rubbery and would probably bend with the slightest breeze.  Both the antenna and rocket were warped out the package, with the rocket taking on a particularly unsightly bend.  The overall paint applications are sparse which is yet another vintage Kenner callback.  The gauntlets lack the accents we’re accustomed to and the red LED readout on the upper left of the chest is unpainted.

Due to the Vintage Collection figure’s removable helmet, the Saga Legend figure could have one upped that figure a third time, but it falls short.  The iconic helmet dent is painted with the subtlety of an Andre the Giant finger paint.  It’s adorned with a giant sliver blob.  If you look at the close up photo, the paint apps along the visor are painted and an angle.  The red is above the visor on the left as you’re looking at it, and below on the right.  How sloppy is that?  Finally it looks like someone gouged the helmet with a scratch-awl.  Why?  By virtue of the non-removable helmet, this was a chance to get the proportionality correct, but even that was missed.  A markedly better limited articulation Fett is available in the Bespin Battle battle pack which sports a correctly proportioned helmet and the extra paint applications to which we’ve become accustomed.  This is better than the Saga Legends Stormtrooper, but not by much.  4 out of 10.
