Proto Fett, Proto Fett
Looks just like the other Fett
Blaster here, blaster there
Nerds are looking everywhere
Look out!
Here comes the Proto Fett

Why does this figure have the community twisted in knots trying to track it down right now (myself included)?  It’s just a repaint to the existing Boba Fett figure without a single sculpting or tooling change as near as I can tell, and that’s not really accurate.  Is it simply because it will probably be hard to find and we like having the things that not everyone has?  There’s nothing wrong with that.  Uncommon items are what distinguish collections.  Is it “t-visor syndrome” and we simply go nuts for anything Boba Fett related?  Or is there genuine demand for the “Super Trooper” Boba Fett in prototype armor?  Obviously there is no single answer and it’s probably a constellation of factors. All I know is Walgreens knows not what they’ve done.  They have invited the retail equivalent of the zombie apocalypse to their door.  Mindless masses of humanity slumbering toward a single aisle muttering “Toys.  Tooooys”.

As mentioned in the open, aside from the base plastic color and the paint applications, the sculpt itself is identical to the one that was released in wave 2, so I don’t think there is a lot of value in describing the capabilities of the figure.  You’re already familiar with it.  It has the same gaggle of positives and few whiny negatives.  The first negative is that the stiff pouches on the belt somewhat limit the leg movement.  The second is that the figure interacts okay, but not great with the BlasTech EE-3 blaster rifle.  And that rifle as well as the included pistol should not be here.  The Prototype Armor Fett didn’t use those weapons.  The BlasTech EE-3 prop is based on a Webley & Scott flare gun.  The primary weapon for the Prototype Fett was a modified uzi.  The sidearm for the Prototype Fett had a stock on the pistol and was hung from the waist with a sling. The Vintage Collection Prototype Fett included the correct weaponry, but Hasbro likely wasn’t too keen on tooling a new weapons library for this figure. Additionally the weapons are absent of any paint applications unlike the previous release which had painted stocks / grips and silver accents.

Aside from the blasters, there are other minor areas where simply repainting the movie Fett is a slight disservice to the Prototype Armor Fett.  The wookiee braids should have been dropped entirely.  They do not appear on the prototype costume.  This is also true for the familiar dent on the helmet.  This figure has the dent, but the helmet on the proto armor was shiny and new.  As mentioned above, the holster should not be there either.  The sidearm was fastened via a sling around the waist and not holstered.  The top of the rocket should have stabilizer fins.  While that would have been the one inexpensive item Hasbro could have included with this release to distinguish it better from the movie version, I think we can just pretend that the fins are in the down position and not obsess about that inaccuracy.  All in all, it is what it is.  Limited release store exclusives tend to minimize the new tooling lest they become cost prohibitive.  A straight repaint of the Episode V Boba Fett is probably the best we’re ever going to get for an obscure off-screen version of Boba Fett, but hey, at lest we have the “Super Trooper” Fett. I’m not going to move the score away from what the base figure earned.  Despite nit picky inaccuracies, the figure looks great and has a supreme posing capability as almost everything figure in the 6” scale does. 8 out of 10.
