Vintage Collection Mania Only Getting Stronger

Posted by Chris on 05/25/15 at 07:06 AM Category: Vintage Collection

Last night an Ebay seller by the name of tigertoys07 sold off the entire Vintage Collection via individual auctions.  The results frankly have my jaw on the floor.  Keep in mind that these are all well preserved unpunched carded figures which will always command a premium, and also serves as a reminder of the value of a well curated collection.  Throwing figures in a Rubber Maid bin is causing them to lose value by the minute.  Keeping your desirable figures in Star Cases in a cool dry place away from sunlight can be rewarding in many ways,

Four figures that reached the three digit club the are:

VC18 Magnaguard for $107.50

VC46 AT-RT Driver (backpack in bubble) for $103.51

VC102 Ahsoka Tano for $107.50

VC105 Emperor’s Royal Guard for $102.50

There are so many figures that surprisingly sold in the $20 to $60 range that they are simply too many to list.  You’ll have to check for yourself, but some of the other auctions that “jumped of the page are”:

VC91 Rebel Pilot Mon Calamari for $37.89

VC89 Lando Calrissian Sandstorm for $51.00

VC77 Ratts Tyerell for $32.89

VC65 Tie Fighter Pilot for $46.00

VC32 Anakin Skywalker Peasant** for $76.75

VC29 Kit Fisto for $86.00

** value may be due to the Fett offer which is rare on wave 4 cards

I honestly could go on and on with Gree over $50 and Aayla Secura (offerless) over $80, etc. etc., but this post would simply become too long.  You have to check it out for yourself by viewing the completed auctions for tigertoys07.

With so much rabid fan engagement, one has to wonder “what the heck happened” to cause this line to fall flat at the end.  One possibility that we don’t like to think about is that the collector pool is not nearly as deep as we think it is.  The other thing is that “Hasbro happened”.  For every two figures shooting above $50 in these auctions, there is one that didn’t even crack $3.  Hasbro simply produced too many figures that are essentially value-less to both the primary and secondary markets.  The definitive answer lies somewhere in a combination of these two factors.  If the above referenced Mon Calamari Pilot were produced in the same numbers are 2010’s 4-LOM, it would likely be value-less too.
